Bienvenidos a Zen Namkhan Boutique Resort

Nestled in the countryside just 13 km (20 minutes) from Luang Prabang (declared a World Heritage site by UNESCO in 1995) this intimate resort is a fusion of Zen and Epicurean philosophies: Zen for the search of tranquility, Epicurean for the pleasure of the senses, all in a natural Lao setting.

The Resort opened in 2009 and offers a range of activities for those who enjoy nature and the natural world as well as relaxation in a stylish retreat. With its jungle surroundings, Zen Namkhan Boutique Resort is a tranquil haven of calm and quiet, with birdsong, the “put-put” of long-tails on the Namkham river, and elephant-trumpeting, the only sonic backdrops.

This ecotourism resort is for guests who want to experience the sounds, sights, scents and experiences of a truly Lao setting. We offer our guests the opportunity to have an authentic Lao experience without sacrificing comfort.

Zen Namkhan Boutique Resort subscribes to the highest principles of eco-tourism. Enjoy our unique ecological chlorine-free pool. This ecological pool is one of the first in South East Asia. We also feature a Lao herbal sauna room next to our swimming pool. Kayaking on the Nam Khan river and self-guided trekking are also part of the Zen Namkhan experience.

Activities include:

• A visit to the neighboring Elephant Village (short hike), Tad Sae water fall (by boat) and/or the village nearby Tad Se
• Trekking in the jungle across the river
• Lao herbal sauna room
• Lao massage
• Kayaking on the Namkhan river and a visit to our fruit trees farm

Our part had a great time in this beautiful place. A real Shangra La jungle setting. A highlight of a four week trip through Vietnam, laos, and Cambodia. The food was delicious ( but a limited menu, which did not bother us a bit.) Great curries, very nice wine selection. We enjoyed the staff, and the owners. The owner has good taste in music too! The yoga class by moon was challenging. The massages by the local village women were much better than we expected,Ina lovely setting. We walked down to the river at 7:30 am to see the elephants bathing, another high point of our travels. There are few caveats: 1) this area is very steep and the villas are spread across the mountain. If you have trouble walking or use a cane/ wheel chair, this would be challenging. 2) you must ask for an air conditioned room! If not, you will get a room that has no screens and you will need a mosquito net… One guest told me that he changed rooms three times before getting one that was reasonably safe from Mosquitos. 4) the pool was too cold to swim in, and it’s too green with algae for most people to swim in. Despite those minor points, this is well two nights and days to enjoy the jungle. Go soon before the new roads and railroads are completed, 2014′ which will bring huge numbers of people to Laos.

  • My stay at Zen Namkhan was nothing short of wonderful. As some of the other reviewers mentioned, if you arrive at night in the dark, your expectations aren’t properly set for the astounding views and hotel grounds that you’ll wake up to the next day. I arrived at night and it was pretty chilly. Thankfully the rooms have two fluffy…

  • The main thing to know is this place is out of town and inconvenient because of that but it is fantastic in every other way so don’t let that put you off, just be aware. The scenery is stunning -out of this world beautiful views and lovely bungalows with a traditional feel but clean and extremely comfortable. Awesome food, lovely staff, quiet and tranquil. An experience. Family friendly but also perfect for couples. Not really for young backpackers wanting to ‘party’ but every other demographic will say it was a highlight of their holiday. Five stars

  • My wife and I had been in Laos for 2 weeks hiking, kayaking, and generally running around, and we decided to end our trip here — and boy was it worth it. Zen Namkhan resort is in a gorgeous setting in the mountains outside of Prabang. Each guest has their own private bungalow (some are connected to other bungalows, some are standalone), but they all have their own balconies overlooking the valley and mountains beyond. The rooms are very spacious with large bathrooms and hot rain showers. The pool area is very peaceful with lounge chairs etc and there is an upstairs library with books and wifi. The staff are really helpful and extremely. The restaurant serves western, Lao, and pan-asian food, and while I’m typically skeptical of such a wide variety of food on a menu, I didn’t eat one thing that was bad. The pad thai, green curry, spring rolls, and Lao food was all great. You can do some day-trips from the hotel, either a walk down to the river, through the valley and by an elephant encampment, or you can take a boat and visit some of the waterfalls and rice paddies nearby. If you’re looking for a lovely place from which you can do some activities, this is a great option. If you’re looking for a peaceful place to just relax, then you’ve found it here too. You won’t regret it!

  • We had so much fun staying here, great spot for exploring the countryside. We had the opportunity to hike, kayak and ride elephants. Remember this is an Eco lodge and you will not be disappointed if you want adventure and fun. The management really cares about making sure you enjoy your stay, they are so helpful in planning activities. Meanwhile you will not find a better smoothie or juice around and make sure you have the fish in banana leaves!!!!

  • We had a great time at the Zen Namkhan Boutique Resort. We felt very welcome and the resort and it’s surroundings are stunning! We definitely felt zen when we left there. We would highly recommend this Boutique hotel and come back if we got the chance!

  • We had an enourmously pleasant stay at the Zen Namkhan resort. In the jungle, yet not too far from Luang Prabang. A pool with natural water. Pleasant cottages with river view. The hostess – Evelyn – went out of her way for us. From the resort we did some great trips, where also Evelyn was a great coach. 5 of 5 starsReviewed
